ABOUT

Platform Artists Group Inc. is an artist-run initiative set in the underground heart of Melbourne, Australia. Platform was established by artists in 1990 and remains a challenging site for public contemporary art.

Our main exhibition space is located under the Melbourne CBD in a rundown art deco subway, also called Campbell Arcade. We use this space for curated shows, collaborative and solo shows, major installation and performance based works.

The subway was built for the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games and features black marble columns with pink tiles in a late art deco style. There are also a number of boutique shops in the subway selling independent fashion, zines and music.

We also show photography, drawing and other works on paper at the neogothic Majorca Building on nearby Centre Place off Flinders Lane (see photo below).

EXHIBITIONS

Platform offers five separate spaces to artists on an application basis:

PLATFORM – the main series of cabinets for large scale solo, collaborative and curated group shows.

FRAME – a single cabinet for use by new media artists.

SAMPLE – a single cabinet dedicated for use by young artists aged under 25.

VITRINE – the largest cabinet space in the subway, dedicated for use by installation and performance artists.

MAJORCA – three display cases at the entrance to the Majorca Building on the corner of Centre Place & Flinders Lane.

APPLICATIONS

Artists are selected in an annual application-based program that aims to exhibit a wide range of mediums and ideas from a broad mix of the creative community. We also curate solo artists into major group shows and we are always keen to see new work and hear from new artists.

Applications for 2010 are now closed but you can make an Expression of Interest at any time throughout the year and we will look at your proposal. Please send a one page project outline, one page Artist CV and support images on a disc to:
